Second Generation of Computers (1960-1964)

Some principle characteristics of second generation were:
  1. Electronic circuitry characterized by the use of transistors invented by Bell Telephone Laboratories.
  2. Punched cards and magnetic tape used for input of data.
  3. Punched cards and paper used for output.
  4. Oriented towards far more versatile types of applications in which multiple users were capable of using the machine concurrently.
  5. Human operators handled punched cards.
  6. Development of high-level languages FORTRAN (Formula Translation), COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language), BASIC. PL/I and others.
  7. Magnetic cores memories were used for Internal storage (RAM) and magnetic disks and magnetic tapes were used for auxiliary memory.
  8. The operating speed is increased to microseconds.
  9. High-level languages could be used to program the computers.
  10. Input and output devices were faster. As a result of their improvements, the second-generation computers became smaller in size, high speed- more reliable and could store large number of data compared to the previous generation.
Typical computers: IBM 140 Series and 1620 series, Control Data 3600, General Electric 635 and Honeywell 200.

  1. The French language is spoken in many countries, including Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, and even Haiti. BiCortex Languages has been developed by two brothers teaching students that how many countries speak french and they are passionate about learning languages and want to share their knowledge with everyone. They have been teaching French for more than ten years and have used many different methods over the years.
